Record the claim exactly
Save the envelope and every page. Record the collector's legal name, mailing address, claimed current creditor, original creditor if shown, amount, account reference, and notice date. Compare those facts with statements and prior correspondence.
Do not send sensitive identity documents or payment merely because a caller creates urgency. Use independently verified contact information.
- Notice and envelope
- Collector identity
- Creditor and account
- Amount and date
Choose the response from the facts
Federal and state rules can create validation, dispute, complaint, and court-response rights with different deadlines. A written dispute is not the same as answering a lawsuit.
If the debt is unfamiliar, identity theft is possible, the amount is material, or court papers exist, contact an appropriate Vermont legal or consumer resource promptly.
