Identify the service

Credit counseling, debt-management plans, settlement negotiation, consolidation loans, bankruptcy representation, and self-help education are different services. Ask what happens to payments, creditors, interest, fees, taxes, and credit reporting.

A nonprofit label does not by itself establish low cost or suitability. Request the complete fee schedule and written agreement.

Reject unsupported promises

Be cautious with guaranteed settlement percentages, immediate credit repair, pressure to stop all communication, or requests to conceal facts. Verify licenses or professional standing where applicable.

Compare the service with official information and a qualified Vermont resource before transferring money or account access.

Verification checkpoint
